Several things factored into the decision to form the non-profit Animal Foundation of Amery, Inc. One was to continue providing veterinary care to the residents of this community regardless of their economic status. Over the past few years, I have become concerned that quality veterinary care is being priced out of the range that many of our residents can afford. Veterinarians today have the ability to do many wonderful things to enhance the health of our pets. Unfortunately, the costs associated with providing that care have put a great deal of upward pressure on the fees necessary to continue in business. Veterinary medicine is not alone in that respect. Access for people to dental care and mental health services is a similar situation.

As a profession, we talk a lot about the importance of the "human–animal bond." It is well known that pet ownership has many positive effects on people’s lives. Love for a pet knows no economic boundaries. Neither should access to the basic health care that pet needs. In addition, there are times when that pet may need specialized care or services -- such as surgery -- that are beyond the financial resources of an owner. The strength of that human-animal connection is certainly stronger in some situations than it is in others. As a veterinarian, one learns to recognize the depth of that bond and if it is important for a family just to have A pet or if it is important to have THIS pet. I have never grown accustomed to telling an owner that they must make a choice between making their house payment or doing surgery on a pet I know they truly love.

Another was my interest in natural resource issues such as threatened and endangered species, wildlife disease problems, and environmental contamination or degradation. Non-profit foundations have access to funding sources not available to governmental agencies such as the Department of Natural Resources for the purposes of research, survey work, and conservation projects. There are many worthwhile projects (stream flow monitoring, for one) that do not receive funding because of agency budgetary shortfalls. These projects can provide useful, valuable information and data for the benefit of our natural world. It is my vision that the Foundation could be a source of funding and a point of coordination for some of these projects.
